Each lesson in this session of 6 classes was designed with seniors in mind! In the jewelry making for seniors classes, students will learn the basics and beyond using various types of materials including semi-precious beads, metals, crystals, needle, thread, wire wrapping, weaving and more. all while applying their learned skills and techniques that will increase with each class. Correct posture is essential while all classes are performed from a seated position. This session will run from September 16 2021 to October 21st 2021 up to a maximum of 8 students per session. Overbookings will be available and will run at the next session from October 28th to December 2nd. Classes will run in the afternoons from 1:00pm to 3:30pm at the Elgin West Community Center in the Craft Room. Students must be members of the Richmond Hill Arts Council and will be required to complete registration process if not already.

At the end of September session, students will be given the opportunity to showcase their creations at the 2021 FestivArts Show & Sale presented by the Richmond Hill Arts Council in late November.

Class # 1 – The Chakra Bangle
Larger beads are used to create a bangle in semi-precious beads that represent the 7 chakra points, with additional black or white and metallic accents. Chakra aspects and gemstone information will be talked about in this 2 hour class.

Class # 2 & 3 – Basic Wire-Wrapping 101Seniors Wire Wrapping Class
This class introduces students to the wonderful world of wire wrapping. Students will again increase dexterity and skill levels while wrapping beads (either crystals, pearls or if budgets permit, semi-precious stones) to create one bracelet or a pair of earrings. Adding knowledge and skills to their experience students will gain more instruction and usage of various tools needed and will learn more on sourcing supplies if they wish to continue exploring their creativity from home.

Class #4 – Chainmaille in Design
Chainmaille crafting can be very therapeutic and allows for students to increase dexterity in their hands while learning to use two pairs of pliers to craft chains using various sizes and colours of metal jump rings. Beautiful patterns are learned and created. The skills learned in this class will also come in handy. Students learn how to easily repair their own costume necklaces, bracelets & earrings.  Increased dexterity is again achieved. Matching earrings may also be crafted if time permits.Seniors Chainmaille Class

Class # 5 & 6 Bead Weaving Creations
Students will weave and intricate design using a fine needle and thread with various sizes of beads including tiny seed beads, crystals, and other beads to achieve a spiral weave. This class extends two lessons given participants enough time to complete this bracelet. The class included a printed instruction for students to take home if not completed in 4 hours.  The designs are easily achieved but look very intricate. They can be extended to necklace length with the purchase of additional supplies. Students are encouraged (and reminded) to wear their ‘cheaters’/ magnifying eyeglasses so they can see the smaller beads. Anyone wishing to bring additional lights may do so for this an any other class.

Please arrive to class early to set up your seat, get your supplies, tools and be ready for each lesson to start on time. During class, students will be provided sourcing information so they can explore the wonder world of hand-crafting jewelry in their own time and shop for their own supplies and tool.

NOTE TO Anna, I was also thinking of a Pearl Knotting course but I would have to sacrifice the ‘Bead Weave Creation’ in order to that. What do you think?
